We went into Sainsbury’s on Sunday to do our weekly grocery shopping and the rack of Johnsons seeds was out! I went a bit crazy with the 4 for 3 offer and picked up:
Aquilegia, Cornflower, Sunflower (3 ft), Ladybird Poppy, Leek, Californian Poppy, Nasturtium, and Cosmos. It’s time to sow the leek, and soon I’ll be planting some garlic. Before I started gardening, I always thought it was sort of an April- September activity; I didn’t realise that it’s a year-round activity. Admittedly, there isn’t as much to do in the winter, especially if you live in a cold climate without a greenhouse (which I’m hoping to remedy this year), but there are things to do every month.
Alan Titchmarsh (my gardening hero) will help you. His fabulous book, The Gardener’s Year (which I picked up in a charity shop for £1.50) tells you what gardening tasks need to be performed each month, gives projects for each month, and tells you what plants are in their full glory each month. If you garden in England, it’s a must-have book.
Excited by the seed purchase, I also went on the Unwins website and created a wishlist with lots of seeds, a Sweet Pea how-to book, and some begonia tubers for the hanging baskets.
Time to get sprouting!!! 😀
